With these two photos, I positioned the oriole feeder in front of some purple flowers in my garden to make for an colorful background.

This is a rarity, as the bird perched facing away from the oriole feeder and checked me out before turning on his “heels” and starting to drink the sugar water.

I have started photographing my Hooded Orioles here in Los Angeles again this summer. They sure are beautiful. I hope you enjoy these images. I have some interest from Simon & Schuster for a book of my hummingbird photographs. I’ve got my fingers crossed. It would be nice to add some beauty to our troubled world these days.

This is Slabsides, John Burroughs’ cabin in West Park, New York, at the John Burroughs Sanctuary. I highly recommend a visit to this beautiful place. This photo will be featured in a photo essay I just finished about visiting Slabsides along with Woodchuck Lodge, another Burroughs residence, on the same day.

SAVING SULLIVAN CANYON

I learned yesterday that the Southern California Gas Company wants to cut down trees and widen the trail in Sullivan Canyon, which is situated behind my house here in Los Angeles. There is an emergency meeting Monday, August 31, at 7pm in the Second Floor Hearing Room (Room 200) at the West Los Angeles Municipal Building, 1645 Corinth Ave., to discuss this. L.A. City Councilman Bill Rosehdahl’s office is a great place to contact. His number is 310-575-8461. You can see how pretty the canyon is in the first photograph. The second one shows me in the canyon today. There were a lot of folks out there enjoying the beauty.

The photo at left shows me at Burroughs’ Woodchuck Lodge. Burroughs used the bag on the table when he was 17 and set out from home to teach school. Please note the portrait of Burroughs behind me.

My Grandfather and Me

In the 1940s, my grandfather Leo Fish took many photographs of the American West, which he developed himself. This black-and-white from Glacier Point in Yosemite National Park matches a color photograph I took of the same scene in 2007.
